• Building the Quay Wall
    The New Port Project celebrated a milestone
    on 1 July 2012 with the laying of the first
    precast concrete block of the Port's 8 km
    quay wall. Upon completion this earth retaining
    structure, which will shape the harbour and
    enable ships to berth, will include over 35,000
    concrete blocks. With each concrete block
    weighing between 37 and 96 tons, and with more
    than 1 million m3 of C40 concrete being used
    in the construction process, the wall will
    take more than two years to build.

    O'Sullivan, MEED's Chairman, on 30 May 2012
    to answer questions related to Mr. AL-Buenain's
    presentation to the MEED Qatar Transport
    Conference, held from 29 to 30 May 2012
    at the Renaissance Doha City Center Hotel.
  • Building the New Port
    The Deputy Emir and Heir Apparent H H Sheikh
    Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani laid the foundation
    stone of the New Port Project on October 10, 2011.
    Also present at the ground-breaking ceremony
    were the Deputy Prime Minister and Chief of the
    Emiri, the Minister of Energy and Industry,
    the Chairman of the New Port Project Steering
    Committee and other dignitaries and diplomats.
  • New Port
    With a depth of 17 meters, the New Port
    will incorporate modern, state-of-the-art
    technologies, planning techniques and
    sustainability principles to deliver one of
    the most advanced and progressive port
    facilities in the region. The New Port
    will highlight Qatar's unique identity and
    culture through architectural design and is an
    essential element of the country's development
    goals and objectives.
  • Economic Zone 3
    A self-contained industrial and residential
    facility, Economic Zone 3 will be an important
    gateway into Qatar and will facilitate economic
    development around the New Port. Utilising
    Qatar's resources in a sustainable manner,
    the new economic zone is an essential element
    of the country's development goals and
    objectives.
  • Naval Base
    The New Port is the future home of the Qatar
    Emiri Naval Forces and will provide Qatar's
    Navy, as well as visiting navy vessels from
    around the world, with first-class berthing
    facilities. Featuring the latest technology
    and state-of-the-art facilities, the Naval Base
    will play a pivotal role in Qatar's wider
    security and defence strategies.

New Port Project

On 19 June 2007 His Highness Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani, Emir of the State of Qatar, issued Emiri Decree No. 37, setting forth the creation of the world's largest greenfield port development. Strategically located south of Doha, the QAR 27 Billion (USD 7.4 Billion) megaproject will span a 26.5 square kilometer area and have an annual total cargo handling capacity of 6 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs).
